Happy New Year!

Bloomington loop with a couple extensions this afternoon for a nice 9 miler.  My whole body felt pretty achy. Calves are especially sore from yesterday's 400s. Beautiful day out again, I've been loving running in a t-shirt this week! (K

After the run, I went and and got a massage from April. Hopefully it'll help my hamstring/knee issue for the upcoming track season.

New Year calls for a new color! I'm thinking I'll go green. And resolutions? Hmmm.

1- Stay injury free.

2- Run 2500+ miles this year.

3- Keep improving in track and cross country.

Warmed up (or more accurately, froze) outside on the long way to the Laub -2 miles- before our mile time trial in there. 8 laps on the turf-type field indoors. No fun at all. Ran a 5:26, better than last time but still not very fast. I think that my time was 3rd on the team though, so almost nobody did very well. After, Ashley and I ran around and around and around and around the Laub for 40:00 to cool down. Jessie and Erin joined us for some near the end. It was fun to hang out with my teammates again after a long break! (DS 7.5) (M spike 14.9)

I'm far too cowardly to face the nasty weather outside, so I opted out on freezing and ran an hour on the treadmill this morning instead. While I ran, I attempted to read my assigned Calc 3 reading. Double torture! It was tolerable only because I had some new tunes to jam out to while I was at it. Yay tunes! (K 265.3)

This afternoon we had weights. Ran there, but walked back up the hill after.

Legs were a little stiff today from yesterday's circuit. Ran to the Laub, then warmed up for 30:00 with the team before our speed workout.

First, we did 3x1000's at 85% date pace (GP 4:00 - easy) with 2:30 rest between. Times for those were 3:51, 3:52, 3:53 - a little under, but still easy. Then a 10:00 break. Once got our rest, we did 6x400's at mile goal pace (for me-5:04, GP 1:16). We had 3:30 for each of the reps, so about 2:15 recovery between. Times for those were 1:16, 1:12, 1:13, 1:13, 1:15, 1:12. A bit fast, but I was excited to feel some speed in my legs! Pretty tired out by the end, but they felt awesome. (M 18.3)

After, Aimee and I cooled down 2 miles the long way back to the dorms. Feels like my legs are pretty well juiced, so tomorrow's run should be a nice recovery. And I'll probably be super sore. (DS 14)

60-minute loop. Probably shouldn't do that one anymore, since running on the canal trail was kinda tricky with all the snow. About halfway in, I ran into Ashley who was just starting out on her run, so we ran together until I was done. It was fun to chat and run easy. (K 272.8)

Ran to the Laub, then 30:00 warmup and 16x400. Coach told us our GP, then let us pick our own recovery times. Justine and I both had 1:31, so we buddied up for them. Since the pace was pretty easy, we did 30 second recoveries between each. They went well, with all reps at or below GP (when below, it was by about 2-3 seconds). 2 mile cooldown back home. Legs feel tired out and I'm excited for the weekend!! (DS 20.5) (M spike 22.3)

I don't remember his time. I think his goal was under 21, and he got it. He was glad, but at the same time it's hard for him to be racing slower than he used to train. :( He was pleasantly surprised to come in 23rd.

Warmups as usual, then our workout in the Laub. First we did four 1000's - 600m at 85% date pace, then date pace for the last 400m. GP 3:45 and 4:00 recovery between each. Times: 3:50, 3:43, 3:45, 3:44. The first two were off on the 85% and date pace, but the last two were right on. Especially tough because my whole body feels exhausted from being sick. Then we had 10 minutes break before our 4x300 accelerations - 100m at mile race effort, then 100m at 800m race effort and the last 100m at 400m race effort. Ouch! Sprinting (or at least, my pathetic attempts at it) hurts, especially around the 200m loop on the turf in the Laub. Dead tired when I finished, so I only ran .85 cooldown back home. Team run from the fieldhouse with three 5:00 pushes at 3.5 effort. Well, they were supposed to be 3.5 effort... the last one was way too fast. And I already felt really really tired out, so I wish they hadn't pushed the pace. Oh well!

Good luck to me in the race tomorrow - I'm doing the 3000m. First time ever! Goals... um, I don't really know what to expect. Somewhere in the mid 10:00's? I guess I'll just run hard and try to stay consistent with my splits and see what comes of it! (K 308.3)

First 3000m ever today! I was feeling kinda crappy before, but it went really well. Warmed up about a mile outside, then another mile and a half (or so) indoors with Vanessa and Kim.

Started off the race with Kim and stuck right behind her for the first while. With 4 or 5 laps to go, I was still feeling good and she was slowing a bit, so I passed her up and tried to pick it up a bit for the last few laps. The middle laps were a bit slow I think, but now I have a lot of room for improvement! I like this race (even though it is 15 laps, ugh) and am not so sad about indoor track now... still a little though. Good race, got 3rd overall and 1st from Utah State. And a PR... but that's assumed with the first time thing. (DS 33.8) (M spike 27.5)

Long run on the loop I mapped out last week. Not too bad of a course, just running up Main for 27 blocks is a bit too boring. And my hands froze! It was 10 degrees out at the warmest part of my run, so sad. At least the snow is minimal. Mostly just relaxed and sang along to some excellent tunes. Good times. (K 322.8)

Sore, stiff and tired today! Probably from weights. No fun. Hamstrings are especially tight. The usual warmup with the team before our speed workout for the week. Then the workout: 3x2000 @ 7:30 w/4:00 recovery, 8x200 @ 40sec w/35sec recovery and 2x300 accelerations (mile, 800 and 400 race pace for each 100) - a total of 41 laps around the Laub. Eew.

The 2000s went pretty well: 7:29, 7:28, 7:27 for them. Nice. Then the 200s - 41, 40, 38, 39, 38, 39, 38, 38. Took a bit to get going, but not bad once I got into the groove of it. The 300's were untimed, but I just about died on the last 100m of each of them. One of my toes had the biggest blister on the side, so it throbbed during the entire workout. Once I got home, I drained it and it feels much better. Tired out! Long day, long workout. Cooled down to the engineering computer lab, then home after I'd finished my project. Again exhasted and sore. Ran around a bit this morning, then later I did 60 minutes on the sweatmill at the Lundstrom Center. It's supposed to snow the rest of the week, so I'll probably be stuck on the treadmill lots in the near future. I'm going to get even better at singing along out loud to music while I'm running though! But I'm not sure when that'll ever come in handy. Scaring people away maybe? Greater lung capacity? Killing-you-guy? Anyway, it was boring. After, weight circuit as usual. (DS 48)

Froze to death on my run this morning. I thought it was only sprinkling rain so I only wore my water-resistant jacket, not my water-proof one. And I got thoroughly drenched. Brrrrr! I was intending to go a bit longer, but I couldn't stand it anymore. (K 346.9)

Later in the afternoon Sam wanted to run some, so I joined him for a half-hour run. We went 4 miles in the drizzle: from the fieldhouse, down 7th north onto highway 89, on the canyon road then up 6th east and back up 4th north, up the old main stairs and across campus back. Fun little run, minimal rain and good company. (DS 52)

I actually stay warmer just wearing fleece- it keeps the water on the outside. I find that when I wear jackets due to cold/rain, I build up sweat (and sometimes ice) on the inside which chills me far more.

Warmed up for about 45 minutes (give or take a few) around the Laub. I only survived because Lexie, Justine and Vanessa and I talked for most of the time and goofed off. Felt pretty nervous for the workout coach had emailed to us: 4x1600, 4x800, 2x600!

Started the workout off with the 1600's: GP 5:44. Did the first one in 5:48, got a 4:00 break, then ran the second in 5:48. As we lined up to do our next one, coach gave us a most welcome surprise and told us we were done with our 1600s! Whew. After a 10 minute break, we started on our 800s: GP 2:44. Times were 2:45, 2:44, 2:44 and 2:44. Right on, but hard, especially on the last couple. Finally we were on the 600s: GP 1:51 (1:14 per 400). 1:54 and 1:52 for those. Man, did they KILL. I just about passed out on the last lap of each of them.  I have no idea how I would've handled today's workout had we done all four 1600s!  But it went pretty well and I'm excited to race again this weekend. Ouch! Today's workout easily won a #1 or 2 spot on my "Top Ten Toughest Workouts" list. I almost cried. Still really sore and exhausted from the race and run last Saturday plus travel all day Sunday, I was tired 10 minutes into our 30-minute warmup. Then the fun part: 3x1600's at 5:44 GP w/4:00 rest, 10 minutes break, 8x400's at 1:12 GP w/full rest, 5 minutes break, then 2x600's at 1:51 GP w/2:00 rest.

The 1600's went pretty well, we actually were under pace for all of them: 5:41, 5:43 and 5:43. All of the reps felt pretty tough, just feeling tired out. On to the 400's:  1:13, 1:11, 1:13, 1:13, 1:13, 1:13, 1:14 and 1:14. Aaargh! I was pushing so dang hard on all of these and those last two still slipped. Only halfway through them, my legs were completely jelly. By the time the 600's started, I was almost in tears, just because I was so spent! The 600's were questionable: 1:58 and 1:59. I'd say they should've been faster, but I had nothing left and even getting those times was an accomplishment. Heck, just finishing this @#&* workout was an accomplishment!

After, I ran home. Super slow. Then I drank away my sorrows... with Sprite!  (DS 74.8) (M spike 45)

Good workout today! Started off a bit funny with warmups being all jumbled... I missed the memo that our workouts are now a half-hour earlier than before. But we ran 20 minutes with some recruits. So I ended up getting in about 35 minutes of warmup before. Then we did 5x1000s GP 3:35 w/4:00 recovery, 10 minute break, 3x800 GP 2:44 w/3:00 recovery, 5 minutes break, then a 600 GP 1:51.

My times were 3:34, 3:35, 3:34, 3:35, 3:34, 2:45, 2:45, 2:44 and 1:52. Nice! A bit tired on the last few and definitely worn out as I cooled down, but a quality workout today. Almost makes up for the freaking blizzard outside. Almost. (DS 94.8) (M spike 53.7)

We did one 2000 @ GP 7:10, 10 minute break, 2x1200 @ GP 4:18 w/4:00 recovery, 5 minute break, then 2x300m untimed accelerations. Times were 7:06, 4:17 and 4:16. Nice workout and not too hard either! Did the 25th north loop this afternoon. My eye got cold for a while and it hurt! Talk about a weird sensation. Why can't it be spring already? Fun run, maybe a bit quick for a recovery day, but I was happy... so it was more of funning. No watch. (K 422.9)

Easy shakeout in Seattle with the team. We ran on the greatest trail - with bridges and through marshes and in an arboretum - it was so pretty and the weather was really nice! It was amazing. At the track after, I did a few laps of acceleration in my spikes. My left shin has been hurting a bit from all the pounding lately and today it was pretty sore, especially on the laps. PRed by 18 seconds and broke 10:00!!! YAY! And still I think I can do better. So awesome! Only 25 seconds off provisional qualifying time for nationals... ok so that's a lot, but still! The race was a kind of weird mentally since the track was 307m instead of 200 like I'm used to. Nice to only have to run a bit less than 10 laps (instead of 15), but different to try thinking in 400s after thinking in 200s for so long.

The first couple laps of the race, I felt really tired and stiff, not really in "race mode." Still, I tried to stick on Kim and keep hitting my splits right on. I lost her a little on some of the middle laps, but kept contact enough that (once I got my head and body together) I caught up on the last couple laps. Went all out on the last lap, just trying to make it under 10:00 and barely got it! Truly, I love running at sea level. My lungs didn't even feel like they were bleeding when I finished! Yay! 7th in my heat, 1st from USU. My 400 splits: 1:20, 1:20, 1:21, 1:20, 1:21, 1:21 and 1:19, with the last 200m at 37. (DS 116) (M spike 59.2)

For the first five miles of my two hour run, I ran with Sam on the Canyon Loop. Then I took a little break and talked more with him for a while since he was done running. He had to do some homework, so I took off and did the rest of my run. Just went out and back on the time trial course plus some on 4th east (in North Logan, I think). I got all the way to 44th north! Survived yet another freakishly painful workout! And broke my record on number of 400 repeats done in one workout. Now that number is 20.

We warmed up for 20 minutes on the usual route, then we started on our 45 minutes of 400s. Coach told us to run as many 400's at GP 1:18 that we could within the allotted time. I did nineteen of them: 1:17, 1:16, 1:17, 1:18, 1:17, 1:18, 1:18, 1:17, 1:18, 1:18, 1:17, 1:18, 1:18, 1:18, 1:18, 1:19, 1:18, 1:18 and 1:18. Then we got 10 minutes rest, then did 800 at 2:40 GP (2:42 actual time). After that we got 5 minutes rest and then did one more 400, this time GP was 60-65 seconds! My PR is 63! Needless to say, after all that, my time wasn't quite on pace. 1:08 for that last one. Ran home to cool down. Hard hard workout, my legs are dead. Dead dead dead. (DS 120.2) (M spike 64.7)

The 1600s were pretty tough, my lungs were raw by the end of each and legs feeling tired out. Times were right on - 5:28 for both. Then the 45 second sprints killed me! I don't use those muscles ever, so they were burning after 200m... pretty pathetic. By the time I got to the 300s, I was just happy to be almost done and just pushed through them as well as I could. I'm so dead! The 5k is such a hard race, but I think I did reasonably well - I PRed by a lot and got 3rd place too. More details later, I'm exhausted and need to go to bed.

So the coaches told me that the 5k is actually really nice because it starts off so slow. But the Nevada girls started it off way fast and I want to kill them. Overall, the race hurt a whole lot and killed me. The first 10 laps or so, there was a pack of 5 or 6 girls sticking on the stupid Nevada girls. I had to run in the outer lanes a bit in attempts to not get boxed in. For the most part, I tried to not look a the laps-to-go sign just so I wouldn't get depressed. It didn't work so well though. With 10 laps to go, I almost cried - realizing I'd only run 3k and I was already exhausted. For a couple laps, one Nevada girl kept stepping on my feet and kicking me and I got so sick of it that after one really hard kick, I yelled "Aarrgh, JERK!" at her and pushed to pass the next girl so I wouldn't have to put up with it anymore. I think she laughed at me... I probably would've if I hadn't been so mad at her. The last few laps were death. The Idaho girl in first was 15 seconds up on us by then, so it was a race for second with a NM girl. I gained a few seconds on her in the last two laps, but didn't quite catch her. Almost puked at the finish. Eew. So so so hard. Hopefully I have enough guts to do some damage in the 3k tomorrow! (DS 137.9) (M spike 74.2)

Well.... today sucked! My legs were totally thrashed from the 5k and I didn't really know exactly how dead they were until I tried to run fast in the 3k. The first half of the race went perfectly - I felt good, Kim and I were at the head of the lead pack and kept the pace down pretty well. Then people started making their moves with about 6 laps to go and I tried to do the same and found that my legs wouldn't go any faster. The pack just passed me up and I tried to hold on but didn't do so great at that. Ended up scoring one measly point and running a really slow time and being really really really frustrated and disappointed. And my legs hurt a whole lot. (DS 140) (M spike 76)

That's a tough double, don't worry about it. Besides, it's nice that you can call this a "bad race" even though it blows away your high school 3200m (a good sign of progression).

From dave holt on Sun, Mar 01, 2009 at 17:44:43 from 75.169.71.32

Paul - or a sign of a bad high school coach!

Ruth, that really is a beastly double. It shows how much Coach thinks of you, what you mean to the team, and your future to put you in that as a Freshman. And the next time you have to pull something like that you'll be that much stronger - just think how easy an 800/med. 800 back-to-backer would be right now!

See you over Spring Break?

From paul on Sun, Mar 01, 2009 at 18:22:07 from 75.162.221.204

Holt - bad coaches don't produce state champs...and good coaches usually set up their athletes to progress into the future. :-)

Stuck with a couple guys I met during the race for a couple miles in the middle, then tried to sustain my pace up the flatter and uphill parts. I must've left my Garmin on after my run yesterday (it was out of batteries) so I didn't get any splits or even a "real" time. I just looked at the big race clock as I ran by the finish. Before today, I'd never done a race bandit. It wasn't too bad, but it's more fun to actually sign up. So next time I'll just plan ahead and sign up before the late fees apply... or talk Steve into giving me a comp entry. After the race, it was great to talk to so many running friends that I haven't seen in a while! Then I ran up the course to the 3 mile marker and back to get some more miles in and got quite a few "you're going the wrong way"s and "I think you're winning"s as I went. Silly people. (DS 187.8)

Boy am I ever SORE! My calves are absolutely shot and my hamstrings are almost as bad. That race was lots of fun, but the soreness has not been. As a result, today's run was quite terrible. We ran out on the TT course for 35 minutes at 8:00 pace, then ran at GP 6:30-7:00 on the way back. Usually this wouldn't be so bad, but ouch! Both the uphills and the downhills killed my legs and I just felt super out of shape. Add wind and a nasty stomach ache and... voila...we have a perfectly painful run. Yay! Tempo miles were 6:36, 6:43, 6:52, 6:49 and 6:24 pace for the last bit. Not great, but glad it's done and I'm hoping that I won't be so sore tomorrow. And especially the next day. (DS 196.2)

Thank goodness coach modified today's workout, it was hard enough without another 1600 and two 1000s too! We warmed up 20 minutes, then started on our first of three1600's @ GP 5:56 w/ 3:00 recovery. All of them were 5:55. First was easy, then a bit harder and a bit harder. Not bad all around though. Then we had a 10 minute break, then started on our four 400's @ GP 72 w/ 3:00 recovery. They went well too - 1:12, 1:12, 1:11, 1:10. It was fun, I smiled for most of them and enjoyed feeling free and fast. Then we had a 5 minute break and ended off the workout with a 300 acceleration. Great weather out and a great workout. Iced after. (DS 200.6) (S Spike 4.2)

Didn't do so well in the race today. I was hoping to run a more consistent 5k than I did at indoor WACs, so I was kind OF frustrated when everybody started off our first 400m at a 1:20. Tried to stick on Kim and the pack ahead of her for most of the middle laps (and got a bit nostalgic when I saw the 8-laps-to-go sign, wishing I was just doing the good ol' 3200m). Calves were pretty stiff and sore for most of it. Bonnie (from the blog, who I randomly met before the race) accused me of sandbagging it, since I had quite a bit left when I suddenly decided to pick it up with 800m to go and my last 300 meters of a kick were pretty fun and fast. Alas, I should've pushed harder in the middle, but I still don't have the feel for a 5k on a track. The next one will be better! (DS 208.7) (S spike 7.3)

Snowy and gross! Nonetheless, the workout went pretty well. We warmed up for 20:00, then did a 5k @ GP 19:10, 10 minutes break, 6x200s @ GP 33 w/2:00 recovery, 5 minutes break, then 12:00 of 800s @ GP 2:50. The 5k was long, but went well - Vanessa and I stuck pace pretty well and hit a 19:12. Then the 200s - ouch. All of them were 33's, but the last couple got a bit hard. After all those 200s and a break, the 800s took a little adjusting to. Ended up doing reasonably well and got 3 of them in: 2:49, 2:48, 2:47. Cooled down with Ashley and up to the Engineering building. Pretty nice workout today. I hope tomorrow isn't so cold and wet! (DS 222.7) (M spike 85.7)

Warmed up to the track and 20 minutes with the team in the wet wet snow. Then we did our oh-so-fun speed workout on the sopping wet/slushy track! Yay! First off we did 20 minutes of 40 seconds at 3.5, then 20 seconds easy around the track. On a couple, I tried jumping some hurdles... I suck. But it was still fun. Then we did 15:00 of 500's @ GP 1:30 (72/400 pace). They were really hard: times were close, but never under GP - 1:33, 1:32, 1:30 and 1:32. After 5 minutes break, we did two 400/200's (400 @ GP 72, 30 seconds rest, then 200 @ GP 36) with a 60 second break between. Ouch! The first one was really pathetic, then they got a bit better. Still really hard though: 75/37 and 73/35.  Drenched and frozen by the time I'd finished - I was absolutely miserable. Ashley and I cooled down around the churches loop after. AWESOME RACE! I'm so super excited! I PR-ed by 26 seconds and it didn't even kill like it does at altitude. Again, I love sea-level so much! I had to break 17:30 today so that I could win my bet, so I was aiming for 84/lap beforehand. I started off a bit quick with the Oregon girls and stuck with them for the first mile or so, then I lost the pack and basically ran on my own for the rest of the race. Reeder was telling me splits, so I knew I was doing pretty well. A few girls dropped off the lead pack and I got one right away and gradually reeled in the other two so I passed them both on my last lap. Shin hurt though. And a lot of Oregon girls beat me. Gross weather! The track was covered in slush and it was snowing huge flakes the entire workout. So, we did a short warmup, then started our workout. Because of the slushy track, coach had us run by effort instead of pace - so no times for any of them. First, we had a 3000 @ 11:30 effort. Ran in my steeple spikes, so my feet were soaked and frozen from the get-go. Still, any shoes I wore would've gotten that way, so I'm glad I had shoes that drained out some of the slush and wetness at least. After 5 minutes rest, we did 5x300 @ 57 effort. Pretty sure they were too fast though... in my efforts to not be depressed about the weather, I got a little hyper. Then coach let us end the workout then, w/o having to do 3x400,200s! After classes, just went on the treadmill for 40 minutes at 7:30 pace, then ran down to weights. The run felt really good, though weights didn't.

Later in the evening, after finding that I have to redo about 8 hours worth of work on a graphics project, I ran to the fieldhouse and ran off some of my frustration. Didn't get all of the frustration out though... I think that would've taken about 10 miles at 6:30 pace. And since I don't want to be dead for tomorrow's workout and the next day's race, I didn't do that. (DS 313.6)

Coach had us do a "Conference simulation" workout, where we had a 'race' today and will have one tomorrow too. So, we did a 1600m steeplechase - time was 5:38. Then we did a 300m sprint at GP 51. But it ended up being a bit too fast... 47. Oops. Felt pretty tired out after, plus I was wet, so Vanessa, Justine and I just did a 15:00 cooldown. (DS 318.1)

Ran the 1500... woo hoo? It was so stinking short! I felt really sore, tired and slow, but my time was equivalent to a 5:07 mile (which would be a PR) so I don't know. Mostly, I felt like I could've done a lot better. So that's good, I guess. Cooled down with Amberber after. Then I helped out with the discus for the rest of the meet. And got pretty well sunburned... curse Logan winters. (DS 322.8) (S spike 36.3)

Tough workout today. Warmed up and all, then started off with two 1600s @ GP 5:52 w/2:00 rest which weren't too difficult - 5:50 and 5:51 for those. After a 5:00 break, we got to the harder part: 6x400s @ GP 70-76 w/4:00 rest. Started off conservative on my times, but got down to the fastest times pretty well later - 74, 73, 72, 71, 70 and 70. Was feeling worn out by this time, even after our 10:00 break, and so the last part of the workout was tough. Two 400, 200's @ GP 72, 36 with 30 seconds between the 400 and 200, then 60 seconds between reps. Ouch. Times were pretty good, just took it a bit too easy on the first 400 - 74, 36 and 71, 35.  Tried cooling down a bit after, but I was dead. So I just ran to the Engineering building and called it quits. (DS 327.3) (S spike 40.5)

I had forgotten that you were majoring in mechanical engineering. I majored in civil and I always thought it would be amazing if someone could complete the work load required for an engineering degree and participate in a sport. It seems like you would have to skip classes sometimes for meets, and it would be easy to fall behind. But that never happened because engineers are too nerdy to be athletes. I guess you're the exception to the rule.

Ate 4 pieces of pizza way too close to practice, so my stomach was super nasty for the whole workout. We warmed up, then did a 'handicap 1500,' where we all lined up, slowest to fastest, and started at different times according to our PRs in it. Then we should've ended up together, if we all ran exactly on our adjusted PR. We were kinda close, but some of us were way off. Like me: I ran 11 seconds under what I was supposed to get (5:03), so I did a 4:52. Still, it was fun... I guess. Then we got a break, then did 2x300 accelerations. After the workout was over, I went and worked on  my water-jumps for the steeplechase. They went really well! My first one was awful, but after that I got past my weird blockage of not landing on my right foot and had really solid jumps. I'm SO excited for Conference next week! Ruth, thats not the easiest workout know to man. We were down in Oceanside with some friends. I hit the fitness room to workout on the treadmill. I had been in there about 30 min, a heavier set gal walks in. She starts to give me her weight history and how she is really dedicated to this new program. Easy shake-out around from my aunt's house, legs feeling pretty stiff and sore.

Weird race. There were almost 30 runners in it, so the pack was enormous and there was lots of jostling as we started. First lap went out pretty slow as I'd hoped (around 92), then the next lap the pack sped up a whole lot (around 83) and stayed quick for the next few. I wasn't so happy about that since I was feeling a bit tired. A fast Nevada girl took her own lead, but I stayed in the next pack after a NM girl, a Nevada girl and another NM girl. I must've zoned out for a bit then because next thing I knew, one NM and Nevada girl had gapped me and I was just with the other NM girl I'd stuck onto. We played 'surge' games for the next few laps until I started to stretch out with 4 laps to go. I lost her and was trying to go get the next girls, but I couldn't really figure out which ones they were by then, since we were lapping lots of people. So, finally, I got my eyes on one with a lap or so to go, but I only gained about 30 meters on her and she still had about 20 on me as we came into the finish. I'm pretty happy with how the race went (mostly that I didn't die like I did in the 3000m in Indoor), just a little frustrated that I lost the pack just ahead of me. Still, it was a great way to finish the conference championships and I'm excited for Regionals in two weeks. (DS 401.7) (S spike 68.5)

Went to the track once we got to Eugene. There, Caroline, Erin and I took off on an easy run around UO's campus. After that, I did a couple laps on the track with a few 100m strides thrown in. Feeling a bit sick (sore throat, congestion) and stiff from traveling, but I'm hoping I'll get over it before Saturday's race. (DS 442.7) (S spike 76.8)

It seems that I'm doomed to do badly at Regionals. XC went terribly and so did this race. Since I'd been feeling really congested and sick, I'd been taking Sudafed in an attempt to feel race-ready. It helped me feel a little more able, so coach and I decided that I'd be ok to race. Turned out I kinda could race, but not well at all.

The first lap I stayed with the pack, but once we got to the first water barrier I totally lost them. If someone told me that they'd left the barrier at the men's height, I would've believed them -it felt that hard to get over- and my landing was the worst ever. The barriers weren't too awful, just tiring, but every water jump was terrible and wore me out way more than usual. All in all, I just was exhausted and breathing felt like I was still at 4000 feet. My head ached and the only reason I did ok in the midde/end was my refusal to drop out or get last place. I finished. And didn't get last.

Definitely a disappointing end to the season, but the circumstances were mostly out of my control. Next time I'll not get sick! Now I'm glad to take a week off and recover before starting up for cross country again. (DS 452.2) (S spike 78.7)

Oh boy. I hate feeling out of shape. It was only 9 days without running? Blah. Well I don't think a run has ever felt so long in my legs yet seemed so short in my head. It went by so quickly, but after about three miles, I was pretty tired. Warmed up with PVXC and ran the Firestation loop from Washington Elementary with Ashley. After, I went to Summit and did the assigned weight circuit for weeks 1-3 of summer training. Soreness tomorrow is inevitable. (DS 459)

Soreness has happened. Not only from the running and lifting yesterday, but all the installing of light fixtures and bashing through wallboard involved in remodeling the basement. I'm feeling like an old granny, hobbling through the house moaning about my back. Anyway, the run this morning was all right I guess. Just went out to Tamarisk and back for an easy 3 miles. (DS 462)

Fun race this morning! Went up not expecting any great shakes with my lack of training for the last couple weeks. But I ended up winning and getting a pretty quick time! Took off with some of the slower fast guys and just settled into a nice, fast cruising pace down the canyon. Didn't wear a watch but a volunteer yelled out our first mile splits - 5:42. Average for the race was 5:41, so I think I stayed pretty consistent throughout. As an added bonus I was around 8th overall, including boys. Felt strong and happy the whole race, it was great! What is the point of fencing off the road, do UT and AZ not get along?

From Ruthio on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 02:21:50 from 75.169.245.137

All I know is that they're putting up a beltway around the entirety of St. George that connects with the new airport and the freeway. And that industrial road intersects with this beltway, so it'll probably become a more major thoroughfare soon. So now we'll just have to drive further out to get to open lands to goof around on... :)

Ran out toward the AZ strip this morning, again took it easy for the most part. In the middle I did 8x20 second pushes with 1:00 recovery. Felt tired, but it went alright. There's a new road that's fenced out past the industrial area, it makes it so that you have to go all the way to Arizona to go out four-wheeling or biking and such. And it gives me less dirt roads to go run on out there. Frustrating. So, instead of taking the new road, I off-roaded a bit to get to the old one. Much better. Anyway, the run was adequate. Then Jonny and I went to Summit and did the weight circuit. (GT 57.5)

Another way too early, way too fast, way too fun Saturday run! Met up with an enormous group of the running club and got dropped off up on the marathon course. Got going with Nate, Ben and Hayden, who took off with the sole intent to kill me within 5 miles. And I think it worked. First miles were sub-7 and tired me out with all that downhill pounding. Hayden took off like we were just out for a morning stroll a little after we took the turn down Snow Canyon. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, there was even a rainbow. But the run killed me off, definitely. Average of 7:15/mi. Ran into Marcie at the ball fields when we both happened to be taking a pit stop - it was so great to see her! When I took the pit stop, Nate and Ben kept going, so I had to survive the last couple miles alone. Awesome stuff! I'm so excited and surprised I did so well in the race today! Just pushed hard the whole time and came out on top, time-wise and place-wise. Hamstrings and calves are pretty dead. And I'm depressed to no end that I had to turn down $500. I am planning on doing a blow-by-blow of the race, I just have to work all night first. So tomorrow sometime, hopefully.

Now, for the mile-by-mile breakdown!

1- 6:16, was sure I'd started off too fast, but just stuck with the lead ladies and hoped they'd slow down, chatted a bit with Erica Schramm.

2- 6:24, glad we'd slowed down a bit, still was doing my best to stay with a group of about 5 women nearby, was thinking how dead I was going to be for the second half if we stayed this fast for much longer (hilarious, since this was actually my slowest mile).

3- 5:47, the crazy downhill started! Just stuck with the leaders and let the hill take me along for the ride. Way fast.

4- 5:48, still downhill, lost a bit on the first few women but just decided to stay with my rhythm and make it up once it flattened out a bit.

5- 5:51, started reeling in the three ladies ahead of me, tried to cut good tangents and made up some ground when they slowed to get some water.

6- 6:00, finally the course leveled off a bit, by now I'd passed one woman and had two ahead, legs getting fatigued.

7- 6:06, at the end of this mile I barely took the lead, which I was certain would be recovered by some better conditioned marathoner, so I was running in fear the rest of the race (half at 39:22).

8- 6:14, with 5 to go I was dying and just kept pushing in hopes of not getting passed.

9- 6:18, so tired, but I was just thinking that 4 miles isn't too far to go... finish it!

10- 6:15, hanging on and pushing, sure someone was right on my tail.

11- 6:16, same as mile 10

12- 6:15, teamed up with a man nearby and helped push it for the last couple miles. So ready to be done!

13.1- 6:16+0:29, finally realized I could actually win this thing, kept pushing with dead legs and cruised into the finish.

Realized right after the finish how close I was to breaking 1:20, but I'm just ecstatic to have run as fast as I did! Met Melanie and got to congratulate her on her awesome finish, plus talked to Erica a bit too. Had such great competition, it was an awesome race. Got to go home with 2 free smoothie coupons, a refund of this year's entry fee, a comp for next year and an ugly trophy! I don't even want to think about all that money I had to turn down... probably won't do this race for another 4 years, so I don't have to turn down that much money ever again. It's just too depressing. But, neglecting that issue, this race was awesome. I pushed harder than I thought I could and managed a huge (6 minute) PR and a win!

Hey congratulations, it was a tougher field this year and you still had a good lead on the other ladies! Do you know if they pushed the prize money down a slot because of your refusal? I remember forfeiting something like $20 in college, nothing compared to $500.

Hey, I noticed that your third mile was 5:47, somehow I ran a 5:48 that mile then someone took off my wings (basically I put on the breaks, I don't run THAT fast but it was cool while it lasted). Good job for running strong, happy running!!!

So last night I planned out this perfect 11-mile run for this morning! But I ran too slow so it ended up being too long... blah. And I had some running math problems too! Somehow I thought that 8x1:30 (12) plus 7x2:00 (14) was 36 minutes instead of 26, so I started my pushes at an inopportune time instead of waiting until I could do most of them downhill or flat. Unfortunate. Anyway... I did 8x1:30 pushes at 3 w/2:00 recovery in the middle of the run. Felt pretty wiped out from the get-go, so they weren't very fast or good-feeling. Oh well. (GT 168.5)

Met up with the club and we drove up the marathon course to run back down. Holt dropped me off a bit after Scott, so I spent the first mile or so catching up to him so I could have some company. Found out that my watch was totally out of batteries, so we stuck together basically the entire way, he stopped for water or to readjust his new inserts a couple times, so I'd just keep running, then turn back around and rejoin him the few times he did (I was keeping track of my run time by clock since I couldn't use my stopwatch). Run went pretty well, felt pretty exhausted and ready to be done by about 10 miles, but I survived! We got back to the old running store and I still had about 12 minutes to go (I blame Holt and his inability with math for that one), so I had to run around the theatre and such a couple times until I was done. Glad to be done with the week and excited to be moving up to Logan soon! (GT 279.8)

Ran to the track, then drove out to AWHC for an easy pre race workout. Jogged the course with the team, did a 5 minute push at 3 (or so) near the end, ran around a little while more after to get to a half hour, then put on my new spikes (which are awesome) and did some strides on the start and finish. Feeling a bit stiff, but ready to race tomorrow! Ran home from the track after. (GT 467)

Woo hoo!!! Sweet race to start off the season today! Started off really relaxed and comfortable, a little under 6 minutes for the first mile. On the second mile a Weber girl tried to break away, but Jessie and I stuck pretty well with her as she went. Mostly ran in third for that mile, but didn't lose more than ten feet on them. The last mile I started to kick it in, especially using the downhill to pass Jessie and Weber with about a half mile to go and just trying to keep my momentum to the finish. Cruised it in strong to the finish and won a college race for the first time ever! The course was a bit short, I mapped the course, it is a 3 mile. So my adjusted 5k time is 17:50- ish.) (F spike 3.1)

After I got home from the race, I went out on a run with my neighbor up the canyon. We ran out to second dam, so about 9 miles. He did super great and it was fun to have company to finish out the week. Awesome day of running! :D (GT 479.5)

Congrats on your first collegiate win! I figure in XC the course can be short or long, but it doesn't matter; it's all about place and scoring those points (or to be specific, NOT scoring points).

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Jogged for an hour in the Hydroworx pool. Afterwards, did some strengthening exercises for my left leg so I hopefully don't get quite so lopsided from only using my right for so long.

Talked to Doc Lyons about the foot. He had hoped that  the fracture was minimal enough that a couple weeks without weight bearing would take care of things. But he's pretty sure it's more severe and will behave more like your average broken bone and take ~ 8-12 weeks to heal. LAME! So in another week and a half (4 weeks after the initial injury), I'm going in to get x-rays to see how well it's progressing. Then hopefully I'll get better news. But for now, I've got some NSAIDS to take and more therapy stuff to do and more time walking around on my "silver legs." Ugh.

So x-rays... just made life more confusing. There are, apparently, two explanations for what my x-rays looked like (my tibial sesamoid is still in two pieces, and has no evidence of knitting together). First: that particular sesamoid can sometimes just be two-pieced naturally, so if that's the case, some cartilage or tendons must've been causing all the crap. Or, I broke my bone into two pieces and it just is being slow in healing, which is probable due to limited blood flow there. If it is still broken, surgeries are somewhat necessary (either pinning it or removing all or part of it). Since we'd obviously rather the first option, Tuesday (the 13th) I'm getting shoe inserts and will start partial-weight bearing! By Saturday, I should be totally weight-bearing and on Monday (the 20th) I'm going to try running! If it doesn't hurt too much, then I'll be ok to go for the rest of the season!

In the pool I did 9x1:15 pushes with 3:00 breaks. 'Twas great...

I RAN TODAY! Did 12:00 minutes at 7 mph on the treadmill! My orthotics gave me a blister on my arch, but my foot didn't hurt too much while I ran! Woo hoo! After the test run, I did my actual workout on the pool treadmill: 10:00 @ 7.5 mph w/45% jets (60 minute effort) then 3 minute break and 9x1:30 intervals increasingly faster on 3:00. Cooled down for a bit in the pool after. Got three new blisters on my toes from the steeple spikes I wore in the pool for the workout. Ugh. Then I stubbed my toe on the carpet and tore off half my toe skin, so my feet are pretty trashed at this point.

Since I'm not competing this season, there really isn't any point in doing speed work until Indoor. So, today I just did some cardio. Started off with TWO miles outside on the TRACK! Super great! And it didn't hardly at all! Much better than either treadmill option. Then Coby made me do 35 minutes on the watermill, blah. But tomorrow I get to do weights for the first time in a couple months and hopefully I'll get to run a little more on the track!!

That's nice to know for sure. You'll be even happier about it when you get to use a 5th year, be a year older, and kick everyone's bum that much more.

Went to weights, rode bike for 30 minutes, then did elliptical for 15 minutes. Exercises, then a rub out of calves and arches by Coby.

oh and congrats on passing me on the quantcast numbers again. I only got that surge because I made my students look at my blog. now they have lost interested in the blog. they are more interested in lewis structures now.

Ran 1.5 miles on the track, then ran another 1.5 miles on it. Not bad on the foot, just my left shin has started being super painful. Ugh. After the runnings, biked for 40 minutes, then did my exercises.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
3.000.003.00

Ran 3 miles in a row! On the grass inside the track, to try to make my shin not hurt so much. Still hurt though. Blah. Foot only hurt a bit  on the last 3 laps. Then 20 minutes of biking. And stuff. Iced my shin and foot afterwards.

Injury stinks. I just had shoulder surgery...not good for a triathlete. I feel your pain. Say hello to Gensel and Coach Reeder for me (oh, Donna too - she's awesome).

Since the shin is being buggy, just biked for an hour today. Read "The Pale Horse" by Agatha Christie and listened to Keane as I did so. Then exercises and home.

This kinda doesn't count as a race today, since I wasn't  supposed to race it, but I did the IWA 5k "Run for your life" this morning. The course was just a couple loops around campus. I think my time was somthing like 18:00, so I'm certain it was short, probably something like 2.6 or 2.7 miles. Oh well. I won and that was fun... but it's not like there was any great competition going on, what with all 30 female contestants (that's a high estimate) jogging the course with me. My shin was pretty sore throughout the race, but my foot felt quite good. Due to my orthotics, I got a nickel-sized blister on each of my arches, unfortunately. Still, 'twas fun to get out and run on the road again!

Shin killed me during my 3 mile jog on the track, even biking hurt afterwards. Blah. So I just iced and headed home, started taking ibuprofen to take down the inflammation.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Just did 15 minutes on the water treadmill, then 20 minutes on the bike before weights. Lifted, then Coby tried to rub out my calf in an attempt to make my shin not hurt so ferociously. We can hope!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
3.000.003.00

Before the 3 miles on the track, Coby did combo (stim and ultrasound) on my calf and it helped my shin not hurt quite so much on the run! By the end it hurt lots, but it felt better at the start! Then I did 20 minutes on the bike and headed home.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Stim before doing elliptical for 15 minutes, then biked for 30 minutes. Read The Pale Horse more - it is getting pretty intense.
Coby rubbed out the calf again, it hurt so much, I wanted to cry!

Combo, then 3.5  on the track, then 10 minutes bike, then biked down the Mt. Logan middle school, then ran around the grass loop there 4 times in my Vibrams, then biked back up to the training room and did my exercises. Shin still killing me, foot getting better.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Biked around Logan for 75 minutes. With about 5 minutes left in my ride, I stopped and joined a game of Ultimate for a half hour or so. Pretty great. Shin is hating me much from that and my craziness at the dance last night. Such is life, I guess.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
3.500.003.50

Combo, then my 14 laps on the track. Shin blah blah blah, running slow, then biked for a half hour, then did foam grabs, balance and 4-way hip exercises.

Donated blood today! Then I went to weights and biked for a half hour. Got my calf rubbed out some more - it's finally loosening up a little!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Combo, then 3.5 on track as usual. Then 20 minutes of bike.

Rode my bike around town for about an hour. Got out before it snowed - yay!

Later at night, warmed up on elliptical for 10 minutes, did a bunch of abs and free weights, then did a 5 minute cooldown on the bike.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Went on a little run around with Cameron. About 25 minutes, just easy and great.

At around 2 AM, I roller-bladed for about 90 minutes around campus. During the day, I rode to Quizno's and back to visit Cammie. So I got in about 15 minutes of biking.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
3.250.003.25

Did a mile on the track, then Coby let me go out on the road! Did a total of about 26 minutes. Then I rode the bike for another 25 minutes with a 5 minute push section.

Warmed up a half-mile on the track, then did a little loop out on the TT then got onto the Stokes trail to Elkridge park and back by way of the canal trail. Great to run out on roads and trails! Shin still buggy, but I think its finally starting to get better! Foot was barely noticeable. Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel! Did 10 minutes on the bike, then went to lift. Coach Matt tried to kill us, I am doomed to be perpetually sore for the next couple weeks!

Ran for 31 minutes, biked 5, walked uphill 10, then biked 5 again. Getting there? We can hope!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

I slacked off and didn't do much of anything but rush around trying to get everything done before driving down to SG!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Ran to Summit (20 minutes) then biked for 20 minutes w/10 minutes at higher intensity, then ran home.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Again, ran to Summit (20 minutes), then did 15 minutes on the elliptical and 10 minutes on the bike, then ran back home (15 minutes).

After half the festivities and most of the food, I went on a bike ride with my cousins. We rode down, then up, then back down the Green Valley loop and then home. The sun set while we were on our way down the second time, so I was a bit chilly on the ride home. Good times though!

Rode from home to the bottom of the Bear Claw Poppy trail, then rode up to the top of the drops (and went down them lots of times) then rode back down and home. Pretty great and fun!
